This German e-learning module features illustrated video lectures in English on Integrated Water Resources Management. The resource was developed by IWAS (International Water Research Alliance Saxony), together with the German IHP/HWRP (International Hydrological Programme of UNESCO and Hydrology and Water Resources Programme of WMO). The 39 lectures are divided into various interlinking sections, arranged to reflect the complexity and interdisciplinary nature of water management, and cover geographical, economic and technical aspects of the subject. The site also features a dropdown menu of keywords which can be used to facilitate searches. Each lecture is accompanied by slides, timelines and abstracts. A user guide explains how to get the most out of the resource.

This popular American radio programme about science and philosophy is aimed at an audience of general listeners and is characterised by its innovative sound design. Each podcast takes a broad theme, such as Parasites, Placebo or Games and takes an exploratory, associative approach to the subject, aiming to stimulate curiosity rather than reach a definitive conclusion about the chosen topic. Each show is divided into several parts, featuring interviews with experts and occasional ventures into audience participation and ‘thought experiments’. The programme’s host Jad Abumrad is a trained musician and his background as a composer is evident in the podcast’s approach to sound, where music, speech and effects overlap, forming an integral part of the programme’s experimental, freewheeling ethos.

This website is the result of an AHRC-funded project to explore the relationship of film history, memory and the urban landscape of Liverpool from 1897 to the 1980s. Liverpool is one of Britain’s most filmed cities and one of the project’s achievements has been the creation of an online catalogue listing around 1700 films, particularly those which record the city’s urban landscape, documenting locations, landmarks and buildings. Consequently the emphasis is on amateur, newsreel, travelogues and promotional films, rather than fiction or feature films. In addition to the usual searches by genre, date etc. users can also search the catalogue by spatial and geographic information specific to each title.
There are also a number of videos, filmed at various events held throughout the project’s duration. Here writer Iain Sinclair talks about his view of Liverpool as an outsider. In this video Ethel Singleton speaks about her role in the Nick Broomfield documentary Behind the Rent Strike (1974), about the action undertaken by tenants in Kirkby New Town in December 1972 in protest at the Housing Finance Bill.

This site aims to promote the creation of innovative video content about plant life and make the best of these films accessible and easy to view on a single website. The site began in 2008 as a competition, with funding and support from three plant biology organisations and Penn State University’s Institutes of Energy and the Environment. The films are divided into two broad categories: General videos are intended for a broad audience, while films in the Technical category are for classroom or research use and are aimed at viewers with some academic background in plant sciences. Although the site appears not to have been updated since 2010, most of the videos are still available.

The IRD is a French public science and technology research institute managed by the French ministries in charge of research and overseas development. The institute is responsible for a number of programmes focusing on the relationship between people and the environment in in Africa, some Mediterranean countries, Latin America, Asia and the French tropical overseas territories. The Videos Online channel presents a monthly film, made in the field, showcasing the different types of research and projects undertaken by IRD and produced in close co-operation with the scientists and researchers involved in the programmes. The videos cover aspects of ethnology, conservation, biodiversity, development and environmental studies. The English-language version of the website features a handful of films with English commentaries: there are many more videos available on the French version of the website.

This website showcases agricultural training videos, specifically aimed at sustaining agriculture in developing countries. The videos are divided into fourteen categories, covering different types of agriculture - cereals, pulses, livestock, fish - as well as videos on business skills, pest control, sustainable land management and mechanisation. The videos can be freely viewed and downloaded in MP4 format and DVD compilations of some of the films are available on request. Although aimed specifically at farmers in the developing world, the site will be of interest to students of agriculture and development studies.

This science and natural history podcast series is distinguished by high production values and an innovative use of video. Its mission is to produce science, nature and environmental films which explore the interconnectedness of the natural world. Produced by graduate students of the School of Film & Photography - MFA in Science & Natural History Filmmaking, the site’s "podcasts" are really short films which are organised according to theme. There is no search engine but the arrangement of the videos into twelve separate categories means that exploring the site’s content is relatively straightforward.

Based in the West Midlands, this charity aims to enable rural and disadvantaged communities to participate in creative media activities and, in their own words, ‘create high quality film, photography, web, and print resources, that reflect diverse rural communities and issues, and challenge stereotypes and prejudice.' The website provides access to many of their films (click here) as well as detailed information on their diverse activites aimed at engaging with young people and local communities. They also run media skills courses specifically aimed at the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities as part of a Big Lottery-funded scheme.

The rationale behind this site is to make it easy for anyone, anywhere, to hold their own screenings chosen from a selected list of documentary films. Using a piece of software called "Indie Screenings" the site facilitates the booking of a film online, automatically calculates the screening fee and then takes payment. The films available - mainly on themes of social justice and environmental concerns - are selected by the Channel 4 BRITDOC team as well as director Franny Armstrong and producer Lizzie Gillett (the team behind environmental film The Age of Stupid). After payment of the licence fee - which is calculated on a sliding scale - the person is then free to charge people to attend their screening, thus recouping the fee and, hopefully, making a profit - which makes the scheme ideal for fundraising.
