Recent series added include The Disrupters, which explores how major industries—from music and cars to hospitality—are currently being disrupted by the latest wave of digital innovation. All the magazine’s videos on international news, politics, business, finance, science and technology can be accessed via their YouTube channel.

Designed as a teaching tool for undergraduate students in the US, computer simulations are used here to explore a number of scientific concepts, the main body of which has been split into four main subject areas: Membranes, Fluid Flow, Cracking Dams and Crackling Noise. Apart from the animations, this site also illustrates its topics with stills, diagrams and video clips (viewable through QuickTime) from documentaries as well as from such feature films as Superman (1978) and The Dam Busters (1955).

As the name suggests, this plain and concise site is dedicated to showing the workings of engines, which are here illustrated using Gif animations. In all some 19 different types are presented, broken up into three categories: Internal Combustion, Steam and Stirling. The explanatory notes by Matt Keveney are simple and to the point and uncluttered by unnecessary jargon, and bibliographies are provided where relevant.

The University of South Florida provides its students with a wealth of streamed material, part of which can be accessed externally. The latter includes public lectures, which can be viewed using MediaPlayer, on topics such as the World Trade Centre attack and Women’s Health, as well as a series of lectures originally delivered at the Symposia on 21st Century Teaching Technologies and several dozen bulletins of their news programme Florida Focus. The Research Channel was an educational television network based at the University of Washington in Seattle and operated by a consortium of leading US research and academic institutions who contributed science-related programming to viewers in the United States and in other countries via satellite and cable television. Due to funding issues broadcasting ceased in 2010, but the collection of over 300 programmes is still available on YouTube.

The Vega Science Trust aims to support and promote the science and technology communities through the use of television and the Internet. It produces television programmes, many of which have been broadcast on BBC2’s Learning Zone. The site contains details of the programmes, searchable by series, subject and speaker, which can be ordered online. There are also video clips (in QuickTime and MPEG formats), complete audio lectures (using RealAudio), complete video lectures by Harry Kroto, and a useful set of links to science video and related sources.
