K-12 refers to the sum of primary and secondary US education: from Kindergarten to 12th grade. This website presents videos made by MIT students, with the aim of engaging young people with science and engineering. Subject areas cover Physics and Engineering, but also Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Biology, Astronomy and Geology. Videos can also be searched according to grade level. Many of the videos are witty and entertaining as well as being communicative and academically sound.

At the heart of this resource is a video library of over fifty maths and science lessons. Led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in collaboration with a number of international partners, the videos are freely available to stream or download in Quicktime or MPEG 4. DVD and VHS copies can also be ordered. Each lesson consists of video segments, a detailed summary, downloadable teachers’ guides and handouts, a transcript and links to additional relevant online resources. A number of the videos also have voiceovers and subtitles in Portuguese and Arabic. The lessons are organised according to topic and cover Mathematics; Engineering; Physics; Biology and Chemistry. A video introduction by MIT Professor Richard C. Larson, presents an overview of the project.

This YouTube channel features sixteen short films made during 2012, portraying life at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics. This American website collates a wide range of audiovisual content on engineering topics, covering recent developments, careers advice, practical ‘how to’ guides as well as more theoretical and speculative material. The site’s video content is arranged across a number of shows. For example: This Week in Engineering" is a light-hearted but informative look at the latest developments in engineering; Some Assembly Required is a series giving practical guidance for specific engineering projects as well as advice on how to use 3-D instruction sets and The Product Design Show looks at the engineering behind consumer and industrial products. The brainchild of former North Carolina State University professor Marshall Brain, this site uses various media, including podcasts and videos, to explain how things work. It is essentially a popular science site but contains a great deal of high quality educational content and has now expanded to cover non-science subjects (see for example How Nepotism Works). Searching is made easier by a clear interface in which categories with their various subdivisions are simply displayed: the Engineering Videos page, for example, features categories such as Robotics, Buildings and Structures, Materials Science. The site’s videos and podcasts are supplemented by a number of blogs.

The NSF is an American Federal Agency which funds research across a wide range of scientific areas, from astronomy to geology to zoology, with the exception of medical science. Open Culture boasts that it offers "the best free cultural & educational media on the web" and their site does a lot to live up to that claim, providing access to a large number of free educational resources, including online courses, language lessons, films and audiobooks. More than simply a list of links, Open Culture is divided into various sections which provide users with a variety of different approaches to navigating the web’s cultural and educational resources, such as a section called 125 Great Science Videos, which is a selective list of films, sub-divided into narrower scientific headings such as Technology & Mathematics, Environment, Geology and & Ecology, Physics, Astronomy & Space Travel etc. Another useful section of the site is a round-up of Intelligent YouTube Channels, which does a good job of sorting the wheat from the chaff and includes a list of universities which have collections of material on YouTube, offering brief comments on each site.

A vast and useful site providing free downloadable video and audio lectures of entire courses from respected academic institutions from around the world including MIT, Stanford and Yale. The site is science-oriented but covers some of the Humanities too, ranging across the fields of Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Medicine, Management and Accounting, Dentistry, Nursing, Psychology, History, Language courses, Literature, Law, Economics, Philosophy, Astronomy and Political Science. Most of the materials offered are licensed by the respective institutes under a Creative Commons licence. One of the more innovative aspects of Learner’s TV is the provision of animations for certain science subjects to help students visualise difficult or abstract concepts.
