The all films have a strong focus on ethical issues. Whether dealing with the Body and Health, Society, Relationships, Culture or Crime, the emphasis is on encouraging young people to engage with and participate in society.

Developed by a team based in MIT’s Comparative Media Studies programmes, this project aims to help lecturers and teachers give young people "the social skills and cultural competencies required to become full participants in an emergent media landscape and raise public understanding about what it means to be literate in a globally interconnected, multicultural world." In essence this means encouraging a move away from traditional teaching practices to participatory learning, which acknowledges how the changing digital and social landscape means that young people are increasingly using the internet as a tool for creativity, not just consumption.
The site features a number of useful resources, including a video and podcasts page which has short films giving examples of various types of participatory culture.

Founded in 2005, this American site pioneered split-screen video dialogues - or diavlogs - about politics and ideas. A central aspiration of the site is to present a diversity of views, rather than cleaving to a dominant ideology. The result is a lively forum that aims to help people see things from perspectives other than their own. The site features a number of different programmes, from Foreign Entanglements, which debates American foreign policy, to The DMZ, in which Liberal Bill Scher and conservative Matt Lewis discuss recent political events. The site’s main focus is political but culture and the arts, science, and socionomic issues are also represented. The site is well presented and the videos themselves have bookmarks to help navigation, which is helpful given the digressive nature of some of the material, such as this video where scientist John Horgan enthuses about why Jane Austen was like a scientist.

UNESCO are making an increasing amount of film and audio material available via their Multimedia pages. A broad range of content is available, beginning in 1945, when the organisation was founded, as documented in this film showing Ellen Wilkinson, then British Minister of Education, reading from UNESCO’s newly adopted constitution. Searching can be done across nine categories: Education; Public Health; Research; Peace & Dialogue; Culture & Traditions; Historic Places; Access to Knowledge; Communities; and UNESCO History. A wide range of material is available, from conference proceedings, interviews and lectures to recordings of performing arts events, documentaries on sites of historic or natural interest and films about UNESCO’s projects and initiatives. The material is all freely available to view. Some films are represented by extracts but registered users can request to see the whole film via the Video on Demand service.

Website offering over 3,000 streamed films, which are available to view for free and supported by advertising. Most of the content is documentary but there are some fiction and feature films. The site is searchable by subject and by channel, or production company and the films include synopses and credits. There is also a ‘Filmanthropy’ section where films are arranged thematically according to their power to inspire or enlighten the viewer and all the films are linked to related charitable causes. Due to licensing agreements not all the films are available to viewers in the United Kingdom.

Coursera describes itself as a "social entrepreneurship company that partners with the top universities in the world to offer courses online for anyone to take, for free". Among the institutions offering courses are Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania, University of California, Berkeley and the University of Toronto. More recently the University of California, San Francisco, Edinburgh University and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne have joined up to contribute to a list of 116 courses across sixteen categories including computer science, biology, education, literature, medicine, economics, mathematics and other disciplines. None of the classes counts as credit towards degrees at the participating institutions but students do receive certificates for completing their studies. The site includes a pedagogy page which explains the pedagogical foundations on which the platform is built, detailing its extensive use of interactive exercises, quizzes and ‘mastery learning’.

A series of ten one hour films made by independent award-winning filmmakers from around the world on the subject of contemporary global democracy. To complement the longer documentaries 17 short films were also made which deal with personal, political and rights issues on the theme ‘What does democracy mean to me?' Some of the films were shown on BBC2 in October 2007. The website includes additional resources. The films are an initiative of The Why Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation that produces and distributes factual public media projects to promote independent information on key global issues. Other documentary series produced so far include: Why Poverty, and Why Women.
