AHDS Performing Arts was set up to collect, document, preserve and promote the use of digital resources to support research and teaching across the broad field of the performing arts: music, film, broadcast arts, theatre, dance. The Online Collections section of the web site contains links to a wide range of AHDS-sponsored digital collections relating to the performing arts. Funding for this project ended in 2008, but some of the content is still available.

Research-TV was created by the University of Warwick to provide broadcasters with a regular news feed of stories about cutting-edge research. It divides its programmes up into Health, Technology, Society, Science and Nature, Business, and Creative and Cultural. Each comes with synopsis, transcript, links, and the programme in narrowband or broadband options (using Windows Media Player). All stories produced by Research-TV’s news professionals are made available to broadcasters free of charge through the APTN service, on local ends for UK broadcasters and London-based foreign correspondents, with additional tape distribution upon request. All stories are available for preview online on the website, on other online video sites (YouTube, Public.TV, OSTN), and also as vodcasts on iTunes.

Formerly an excellent guide to web sites on the humanities, with helpful but not overwordy site descriptions and useful background material. It also integrates search results with results from the database of the North West Film Archive, an innovative and very welcome initative. NB Intute closed in July 2011 and the site has now been archived. No further resources are being added and no changes are being made to existing content, so the resource will increasingly become less useful and reliable.

Formerly the BBC’s Videos for Learning and Teaching and more recently known as BBC Active, this is an important catalogue for the wide-ranging video tapes of previously transmitted programmes offered by the Corporation to educational institutions. Sadly, as part of its rebranding, the prices have increased up by up to a factor of five (the average cost per title is now £125). The material however remains irreplaceable. It includes such classic documentaries as Life on Earth, The Ascent of Man and items from the Horizon series as well as the perennial BBC Shakespeare titles. These can be by title or contributor, as well as by series and by the following subject categories: Anthropology, the Arts, Business, Drama, Education, Engineering, Environment, Literature, Health & Medicine, History, Natural World, Science & Technology and Social Issues. These titles can also be licensed separately for online learning, festival screenings and exhibitions. Please note that only a small part of the holdings are listed online and it is a good idea to request titles directly.

A bilingual index available in French and English of silent films available on DVD, covering discs encoded for Regions 1, 2 and 4. Simply but effectively designed, one can search alphabetically by film title, actor and publisher (listed as "editor", one of the few errors left over from its French language origins). Although not much detail is given about individual titles per se, the covers of most of the discs have been scanned in. A limited but very useful amateur site that supports this still under resourced part of the world’s film heritage.

Part of the Internet Archive, which also covers archived moving images (The Internet Moving Images Archive), audio and software, the Wayback Machine holds cached versions of thousands of websites and billions of pages, allowing users to look at sites that are no longer available or at earlier versions of ones that are still around. An invaluable resource that, due to the gigantic nature of the holdings, is slightly hampered by the fact that no list of the holdings can be easily provided. This means inevitably that correct recall of the URL in question is necessary, or failing that, searching for it on the web first.
