This innovative podcast is created and presented by Roman Mars, who devotes each 5 to 10 minute episode to exploring an aspect of design or architecture, based on the notion that the most interesting aspect of an object or building is almost always overlooked. From there Mars usually tries to draw a wider conclusion about what makes design work and the difference between good and bad design. Episodes cover such diverse subjects as the reconstruction of Warsaw’s Old Town after World War II, the theory of dazzle camouflage and the design of airport terminals, parking meters and toothbrushes.

The British Postal Museum and Archive has a series of podcasts on aspects of the British postal service. Some focus on philately and design, looking at how the work of artists such as Eric Ravilious and Barnett Freedman has shaped public perception of the Post Office. Other podcasts consider social and political aspects of the Post Office’s history. In one example Tony Benn speaks about how he created the National Girobank during his time as Postmaster General. In another Dr Katherine Rake speaks about an incident in 1909 when two suffragettes posted themselves to 10 Downing Street, in an attempt to deliver a message personally to Prime Minister Herbert Asquith.

    Archives/Museums, Distributors

This self-styled ‘Robin Hood of the avant-garde’ was established 15 years ago as an archive and distributor of art films and is now partially based in Mexico. The disclaimer tells us: ‘All materials are for non-commercial and / or educational use only.' There is some fascinating and rare work here as well as some genuine obscurities. Along with Tweets and podcasts, the site hosts dozens of films, shorts and features, ranging from early works by the likes of Brian de Palma and Joseph Cornell to more widely-known experimental filmmakers such as Andy Warhol, Jean Cocteau and Steve McQueen. Part of the site is now devoted to electronic music and sound. The website is large and cleanly laid out though the lack of any guided search tools is unfortunate - the legal aspects behind the hosting of much of the content is at best questionable, but its intentions are seemingly honourable.
