Spotlight on Design, a service from the National Building Museum in Washington, DC, is an ongoing lecture series featuring architects and designers of distinction from around the world. Since its inception in 1997, the series has presented many of the world’s premier design voices in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, and design. Past Speakers include Pritzker Prize Laureates Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, and Rem Koolhaas; American Institute of Architects’ Gold Medalists Antoine Predock, Santiago Calatrava, and Frank Gehry; and the American Society of Landscape Architects’ Medal recipients Richard Haag and Joseph E. Brown. Spotlight on Design also highlights the innovative work of such firms as Asymptote, field operations, and Snøhetta.

Artfilms-Digital is the video streaming service of Contemporary Arts Media and Artfilms offering more than 5000 films for arts education and arts practitioners. Users can watch a preview but must take out a subscription to view the entire film. Films may also be purchased. Films can be searched by title or by category (e.g. Art History, Dance on Film, Performance Art). Catalogues arranged by theme can be downloaded as a pdf.

The Theatre Archive Project is an ongoing project to reinvestigate British theatre history from 1945 to 1968, from the perspectives of both the theatregoer and the practitioner. The project is a collaboration between the British Library and the De Montfort University and is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). The project comprises a number of strands that support study of this period of British theatre history, as well as an opportunity to analyse and debate findings through a blog. The Oral History strand began in November 2003, and aims to interview as many people as possible who visited or worked in the theatre between 1945 and 1968. Transcripts are available for most recordings. Over 250 interviews have been added to the site, and interviewees include Frith Banbury, Michael Frayn, Trevor Griffiths, Glenda Jackson, Ann Jellicoe, Ian McDiarmid, Peter Nichols, Corin Redgrave, Arnold Wesker, Timothy West.

A substantial library of videos on theatre and theatre making produced by the National Theatre, London. Topics include choreography and movement, armoury, music in theatre and set design. There are many interviews and conversations with actors and theatre practitioners who have been involved in NT productions including Judi Dench, Peter Hall, Alan Bennett and Simon Russell Beale. There are also talks on broad themes - Brechtian staging, Greek tragedy and the process of rehearsal.

There are also interviews with and profiles of architects, as well as animations, links to webinars and other learning resources. A useful source of information for anyone interested in, or studying architecture.

A portal which helps people to ‘find great podcasts’. Curated by Max Temkin and Veronica Corzo-Duchardt, the site presents a selection of mainly American podcasts, arranged under a number of topics, including Tech, Science & Education, Politics & Econ and Storytelling. An Interview page features transcripts of question and answer sessions with podcasters, writers, designers and other culturally-aware, creative people, who talk about their favourite podcasts, and why (and how) they like listening to them. The site works well because its focus is fairly narrow: the emphasis is on curation, and presenting a carefully selected range of interesting podcasts, rather than a comprehensive but overwhelming list of resources.

This online encylopedia from Italy consists of thousands of short videos - generally between three and five minutes long, many of them based on entries from the Treccani Encyclopaedia and approved by the Istituto dell’Enciclopedia Italiana. Topics covered include Art and Design; Cinema; Culture; Economics and Politics; Music and Dance; Tourism; Science and Sport. This could be a good resource for Italian language students but the breathless editing and distractingly loud music which accompanies the voiceovers does not necessarily present the content in its best light.

To celebrate the reopening of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Wallpaper hosted a discussion on digital innovation, in which the panel, including the museum’s director of collections, Taco Dibbits, explore how interactivity, and allowing the public to creatively reuse the digitised collections, is vital to the future of cultural repositories like the Rijksmuseum.

This innovative podcast is created and presented by Roman Mars, who devotes each 5 to 10 minute episode to exploring an aspect of design or architecture, based on the notion that the most interesting aspect of an object or building is almost always overlooked. From there Mars usually tries to draw a wider conclusion about what makes design work and the difference between good and bad design. Episodes cover such diverse subjects as the reconstruction of Warsaw’s Old Town after World War II, the theory of dazzle camouflage and the design of airport terminals, parking meters and toothbrushes.
