BIBS is an interactive television system constructed using Internet2 Mbone IP-Multicast technology and Real Networks streaming media technology, being developed on the UC Berkeley campus to support distance learning, distributed collaboration, and interactive television applications. BIBS produces live webcasts, then archives these for on-demand replay (at least 100 Kbs bandwidth required). The schedule for 2001 includes lecture series on General Biology, General Chemistry, Computing, Classic Myths, Aging, Microelectromechanical Systems, Mathematics, Nutrition and Physics. Most of the lectures use Real Media and the individual schedules are clearly laid out, although not all lecture titles are given. Hundreds of video lectures and tutorials from around the world are available from here on a variety of scientific topics as well as interviews with such luminaries as Tim Berners Lee and Noam Chomsky. Windows Media Player is required to view. The presentation is for the most part very straightforward and rarely goes beyond the taping in medium shot of a speaker lecturing his audience, though some of the interviews do stray outside the lecture hall. The encodings are perfectly watchable even for items that last over an hour and in addition copies of the relevant PowerPoints have sometimes been included. The site does not offer a subject index, but there is an alphabetised run down of all the speakers. The site is available in English and Slovenian.

Produced by the University of Virginia’s Department of Computer Science, this celebrated site uses data from the Internet Movie Database to show the degrees of separation between any screen actor and Kevin Bacon. The site is a demonstration of some fundamental principles of computer science and mathematics, as well as being an illuminating illustration of the spread of world cinema, and great fun. So, for example, Mary Pickford has a Bacon number of 3: she was in Hollywood Hobbies (1939) with William ‘Billy’ Benedict, William ‘Billy’ Benedict was in Farewell, My Lovely (1975) with Sylvester Stallone, Sylvester Stallone was in Dolan’s Cadillac (2002) with Kevin Bacon.

The Open Video Project aims ‘to collect and make available a repository of digitized video content for the digital video, multimedia retrieval, digital library, and other research communities.' It is being developed by the Interaction Design Laboratory at the School of Information and Library Science, University of North Carolina. It is building up a library of downloadable video segments in MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and so far includes materials predominately from the Carnegie Mellon University Infomedia Project on geology, geography and oceanography; the University of Maryland Human-Computer Interaction Lab; and particularly the Prelinger Archives (the Internet Moving Images Archive) on everyday life in America. The Browse feature indicates how the videos are categorised by genre (documentary, lecture, educational, ephemeral), duration (under a minute to over ten minutes - many titles are available in segmented form), colour, sound and contributing organisation. Each title comes with basic catalogue information.

The Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis has provided four complete series of hour long video lectures online using RealPlayer (either 56k or broadband): Computer Science (Visual Basic Programming 25 parts), English (Children’s Literature 21 parts), Geology (Indiana Geology 25 parts) and Health (Personal Health 15 parts). Another 15 lectures on Shakespeare are on the site, but are only available to registered students. The lectures never really stray from the usual format of simply recording the teacher standing and speaking for the whole time and no ancillary material is available from the site, which is otherwise admirably uncluttered and easy to use.
