The brainchild of former North Carolina State University professor Marshall Brain, this site uses various media, including podcasts and videos, to explain how things work. It is essentially a popular science site but contains a great deal of high quality educational content and has now expanded to cover non-science subjects (see for example How Nepotism Works). Searching is made easier by a clear interface in which categories with their various subdivisions are simply displayed: the Engineering Videos page, for example, features categories such as Robotics, Buildings and Structures, Materials Science. The site’s videos and podcasts are supplemented by a number of blogs.

This website, which has the support of a number of academic and birdwatching institutions, is a community database consisting of recordings of bird sounds from around the world. There are around 67,000 calls and songs from over 7,000 birds and the site’s search engine enables the user to search according to a variety of sonic criteria, including length, volume and pitch. All the sounds are classified by species, country and location, time, date, elevation and are assigned a unique catalogue number. The recordings appear under a Creative Commons licence and can be downloaded and used under the terms of that licence.

The NSF is an American Federal Agency which funds research across a wide range of scientific areas, from astronomy to geology to zoology, with the exception of medical science. A particular aim is to fund cutting-edge research: projects and collaborations which may "seem like science fiction today" but tomorrow will be accepted as part of the fabric of everyday life. Their nanoscience page reflects this commitment to pushing back the frontiers of scientific research. The Multimedia Gallery features stills, podcasts, film and video across all fields of science and engineering, again, with an emphasis on current research and development, coupled with an awareness of the foundation’s educational mission.

This Week in Virology (TWiV) is a site featuring podcasts, lectures and videos about viruses - "the kind that make you sick" as the website puts it. It was begun in September 2008 by Vincent Racaniello and Dick Despommier, two science Professors at Columbia University Medical Centre. Although obviously likely to appeal to those with an academic or professional interest in the subject, the website aims to be accessible to everyone, "no matter what their scientific background".

The site presents a series of lectures, interviews and readings from various conferences and symposia with the emphasis on serious current scientific research and its moral, ethical and philosophical implications. The subjects covered include cognitive science, neuroscience, stem cell research, oncology, evolution and aging. The site has much that is interesting but of particular note are the proceedings of the Beyond Belief conference, a lively wide-ranging conference on science and religion featuring a large group of eminent scientists and philosophers, including Richard Dawkins, biologist and philosopher Francisco J. Ayala, planetary scientist Carolyn Porco and co-founder and Director of The Science Network Roger Bingham. TSN’s website features streaming videos and podcasts, which are also available for download.
