    This online interactive resource depicts the Apollo 11 lunar module ‘Eagle’ landing on the moon and includes original Apollo 11 spaceflight video footage, communication audio, mission control room conversations, text transcripts, and telemetry data, all of which have been synchronised into an integrated audiovisual experience. The resource presents the moon landing as experienced by the astronauts and the flight controllers in a way which captures the drama of the event as well as highlighting its significance as a feat of engineering. A timeline guides visitors to the crucial moments in the mission, including: computer alerts, low level fuel milestones, and the landing itself.

    A stimulating and useful resource for maths students, of all levels and abilities, Plus Magazine presents articles and podcasts about all aspects of mathematics, from the theoretical and philosophical to practical applications in cosmology, art, engineering, medicine and sport. There are also news articles and puzzles. The podcasts cover a broad range of subjects, including interviews and conference reports, as well as more in-depth features on a diverse range of subjects, including how gravity works, the ten dimensions of string theory and the weird and wonderful story of the Gomboc: a look at a three dimensional object which until recently no-one knew even existed.

    Plus is part of the Millennium Mathematics Project, a long term national initiative based at Cambridge University which aims to help people of all ages and abilities achieve a better understanding of mathematics and appreciate the range and importance of its applications to science and commerce.

    Based at Stanford University, The Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, was set up in 2003 to serve as a bridge between the disciplines of astrophysics, cosmology and particle physics. The website features a Media page divided into five sections: Find Answers to your Questions, Images, Movies, Lectures and Educational Videos, showing computer simulations of various cosmic phenomena and objects as well as lectures and talks on dark matter, dark energy, black holes and the origins of the universe.

    Created by a group of astronomers at The University of Manchester’s Jodrell Bank, this monthly, hour-long podcast has a magazine format, featuring interviews, news, what to look out for in the night sky and presentations from astronomers on the latest research in their field. The podcast is free to subscribe to and can be downloaded. Nicely presented with a detailed textual summary of each episode, useful links and a forum.

    This excellent space-related news website features discussions, views and up-to-the minute expert opinion on the latest stories from the world of astronomy and space exploration. Universe Today was founded in 1999 by Fraser Cain and edited by Nancy Atkinson, whose passionate, no-nonsense approach informs the site’s journalistic style. Stories are concisely reported and illustrated with stills and video clips. In addition to the news section there is a Guide to Space, which contains facts about the solar system, the universe and other related subjects, as well as a host of useful links to other science websites.

    Celestia is a space simulation programme which allows the user to explore the solar system and beyond through the use of a point and go to navigation system which makes it easy to select a destination and then zoom in on the surfaces of moons, stars, planets and other stellar objects. A list of related sites includes a repository of add-ons called the Celestia Motherlode, as well as lists of resources and guides. Celestia is freely available for download and works on Mac, PC and Linux systems.

Much of the content is concerned with the Messier Catalogue, a set of astronomical objects catalogued by the French astronomer Charles Messier and includes this film about the Crab Nebula - the first object catalogued by Messier and given the number M1. Other videos on the site look at technical aspects of filming deep space objects, famous astronomers, recent developments in astronomy, as well as a group of videos about telescopes.
