Much of the material is freely available but some is for the use of Higher and Further Education institutions only.

This self-styled ‘Robin Hood of the avant-garde’ was established 15 years ago as an archive and distributor of art films and is now partially based in Mexico. The disclaimer tells us: ‘All materials are for non-commercial and / or educational use only.' There is some fascinating and rare work here as well as some genuine obscurities. Along with Tweets and podcasts, the site hosts dozens of films, shorts and features, ranging from early works by the likes of Brian de Palma and Joseph Cornell to more widely-known experimental filmmakers such as Andy Warhol, Jean Cocteau and Steve McQueen. Part of the site is now devoted to electronic music and sound. The website is large and cleanly laid out though the lack of any guided search tools is unfortunate - the legal aspects behind the hosting of much of the content is at best questionable, but its intentions are seemingly honourable.

The site began by concentrating on explaining the holdings and workings of the BBC Archives, using short videos, accompanied by written text, and frequently-asked questions. Separate pages cover different aspects of the Archive and issues relating to them - television, sound, written, photographic, contributor rights, preservation and cataloguing, test cards and ceefax, the bits between programmes, and the BBC Heritage Collection. Since 2008 the website has diversified to include themed collections of archival radio and TV programmes (streamed complete or as extracts), documents and photographs. Topics currently featured include the Holocaust, Cuba and the Cold War, Doctor Who, WW2 relations with the USSR, Francis Bacon, the birth of the NHS, survivors of the Titanic, and working class life. Also available are the complete series of David Atttenborough’s 1956 ZOO QUEST FOR A DRAGON and MEN AND MONEY (1964), and the first BBC colour series from 1957, WHAT WE WORE, on the history of fashion. The front Archive page also links to other sections of the BBC website that host archival collections - IN OUR TIME, Radio 3 World Music Archive, WOMAN’S HOUR, World Service Archive, and clips from PLANET EARTH and AUTUMNWATCH in the Wildlife Finder.
