The Bradshaw Foundation is a privately funded non-profit organisation which exists to discover, document and preserve ancient cave and rock art around the world, and promote the study of early humankind’s artistic achievements. The foundation’s online learning resource contains a wealth of material on prehistoric art along with essays, notes, timelines, links, newsletters, links to research papers as well as useful contextual information on paleoanthropology, archaeology and genetic science. The resource is extensively illustrated with myriad stills of paintings, carvings and artefacts from many of the most significant prehistoric sites around the world. There is now a new film archive section which includes a series of interviews with eminent prehistorians and other audiovisual material. The Bradshaw Foundation’s podcast can be found on iTunes and is free. Other notable resources include a section on the significance of abstract geometric signs in cave art and the journey of humankind from its origins in Africa, shown via an interactive map and timeline.

Hosted by the University of Texas at Austin, this resource aims to facilitate the teaching of anatomy by providing three dimensional images and animations of the human skeleton and other primates, including gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans. The site is clearly laid out and easy to use, and the quality of the images - which were created with the use of a 3D laser scanner, high resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) and digital photography - is outstanding. The site’s interface allows information about the bones and how they attach to muscles to be turned on and off. Also of interest, and built on similar principles, is sister-site eLucy, which is devoted to the remains of a member of the species Australopithecus afarensis, whose skeleton is one of the most complete australopithecine fossils ever found.

This e-book uses text, images, maps, animations, interviews and time-lapse video to tell the story of how a common weed - teosinte - was transformed into maize via domestication and cross-breeding and traces the crop’s history from ancient Mexico up to the present day, covering everything from genome sequencing and transposons to genetic modification and biofortification of modern maize, culminating in the Maize Genome Sequencing Project in 2009. The brainchild of former North Carolina State University professor Marshall Brain, this site uses various media, including podcasts and videos, to explain how things work. It is essentially a popular science site but contains a great deal of high quality educational content and has now expanded to cover non-science subjects (see for example How Nepotism Works). Searching is made easier by a clear interface in which categories with their various subdivisions are simply displayed: the Engineering Videos page, for example, features categories such as Robotics, Buildings and Structures, Materials Science. The site’s videos and podcasts are supplemented by a number of blogs.

ChronoZoom is an open source, community collaboration between UC Berkeley, Moscow State University, and Microsoft Research that aims to cover - literally - life, the universe and everything, from the Big Bang to the present day. Visually stunning, if potentially overwhelming, Chronozoom works dynamically, based as it is on zoomable interactive timelines, to create a visual sense of the immensity of time - 13.7 billion years of "big history" - in a way that would be impossible in a static timeline. Still in its early stages at present, the site is limited to timelines and exhibits, but as geologist Walter Alvarez explains in the introductory video, further content will be developed in the future. Given the project’s ambitions, it is unsurprising that navigating the site can prove initially somewhat disorienting, but patient users will be rewarded with a powerful sense of the true scale of time over cosmic, geological, biological and social periods.

DigVentures is the body behind the Europe’s first-ever crowd-funded and crowd-sourced archaeological excavation, at Flag Fen in Peterborough - the site of a Bronze Age causeway made of millions of vertical and horizontal timbers, the existence of which is threatened by the retreat of waters which have hitherto acted to preserve the structure. The website features blogs and videos documenting the excavation, information about the site and its importance as well as details on how to contribute and volunteer and profile of ‘venturers’. The success of the dig indicates that such projects may well have a significant role to play in archaeology, providing, as they do, not just a source of funding, but also labour for ventures that previously would have proved difficult to undertake.

The Portus Project is an ongoing and long-standing collaborative venture based around the excavation of the maritime port of Imperial Rome. This website features images, videos and computer graphics which illustrate some of the most significant findings about the site. The CGI research at Portus section explains the importance of the use and application of CGI technologies in the archaeological field and is illustrated with a series of 3-dimensional visualisations of the port including the lighthouse, accompanied by a film which gives a good overview of the project.

This resource aims to create awareness of its work on the foreshore of the Thames and stimulate interest in the archaeology and history of the river. A series of informative and well-made videos covers a range of significant sites, including footage of a dig on the shore near Tower of London and an intriguing film called Murder on the Foreshore? which shows what happened following the discovery of a human skull at low-tide in the mud near the Isle of Dogs.

The podcasts and videos from the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC offer a comprehensive range of lectures, talks, conversations with contemporary artists and collectors and films about the gallery’s history, exhibitions and collections. Rachel Whiteread, Andy Goldsworthy, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude are just some of the artists who can be heard talking about their work.
