Until Google bought YouTube at the end of 2006, Google Video described itself as "the world’s first open online video marketplace, where you can search for, watch and even buy an ever-growing collection of TV programmes, films, music videos, documentaries, personal productions and more". Google Video continues to host free videos including user-generated content, but no longer operates its video shop. Former Google Video content partners such as ITN have moved their video clips to channels on YouTube.

Founded in 2005, and now owned by Google, this free resource provides a quick and easy way to post moving image content online. The site allows users to upload, tag and share videos worldwide; browse millions of original videos uploaded by community members; find, join and create video groups to connect with people who have similar interests; customise the experience by subscribing to member videos, saving favorites, and creating playlists; integrate YouTube videos on websites using video embeds or APIs; and make videos public or private—users can elect to broadcast their videos publicly or share them privately with friends and family upon upload. It is an extraordinary - and hugely popular - resource. Following legal action, much of the copyright-infringing material previously broadcast on the site has now been removed and broadcasters are signing agreements for their content to be included. In late 2009 a Shows section was created, which hosts full-length television programmes from 60 providers including the BBC, Five, PBS and Channel 4. Channel 4 is using Youtube to provide a mirror not only for its 4OD 30-day catchup service, but also to show full-length programmes such as several complete series of TIME TEAM and David Starkey’s MONARCHY.
