Site dedicated to electronic musician and composer Daphne Oram. Oram, who co-founded the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop, devoted her career, after she left the BBC in 1959, to the development of her own Oramics system, a pioneering form of sound sythesis based on the use of 35 mm film strips which are drawn or written on by the musician and generate sounds when passed over photo-electric cells. This site features biographical details along with information about how to access the Daphne Oram collection which is held in Goldsmith’s University’s special collections and includes papers relating to Oram’s work at the BBC, personal documents, papers relating to the Oramics system, photographs, musical scores, computer code and sound recordings. A small but fascinating selection of sound clips features Oram introducing some of her own pieces including the soundtrack to the Geoffrey Jones film ‘Snow’ which was made for British Transport Films in 1963.

This site provides online access to a selection of the Open University’s materials - images and text-based items as well as audio and videos - as well as functioning as a record and an archive of the OU’s collections. Publicly available collections currently include over 160 images from the Historical Archives Collection, over 100 videos of OU events, such as degree ceremonies and other programmes about the OU, dating back to 1971. OU’s programmes are represented by a series of clips from courses which include science, technology and the arts. A number of online exhibitions have also been created to contextualise some of the material. These include: ‘Shakespeare at the OU’, ‘Harold Wilson and the OU’ and ‘The OU Story’.

This resource features interviews gathered by the British Antarctic Survey Archives Service. The audio clips are freely available and are accompanied by transcripts. The focus is on those involved with polar science, especially people who worked for, or closely with, Operation Tabarin, 1943–45, Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), 1945–61, and British Antarctic Survey (BAS), 1962–present. Interviewees include members of the scientific teams such as meteorologists, geologists and ionosphericists, as well members of the technical and support teams such as radio operators, pilots, medics, mechanics and cooks. Searching can be done by subject keyword, location and person name.

This site features some of the work being undertaken by a large interdisciplinary study of voice-hearing based at Durham University and supported by the Wellcome Trust. The team includes academic researchers from cognitive neuroscience, English Literature, cultural studies, medical humanities, philosophy, linguistics, psychology, psychiatry and theology. The Brit Lab Original series consists of a series of short films featuring experiments and investigations into various phenomena, including decomposition, spontaneous combustion and cannibalism. Hannah Fry’s Number Hub videos see the mathematician explaining mathematical concepts and theories in an entertaining and engaging way.
