The Steven Spielberg Film Archive at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem holds the world’s largest collection of Jewish documentary film footage. Its ‘Virtual Cinema’ is now streaming over 100 titles from the collection (using Windows Media Player), divided into Jewish Communities, Holocaust, Pre-State, State of Israel and Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The ‘cinema’ presentation of the films is particularly attractive. Information on the individual titles is scanty, but the Archive’s catalogue is available elsewhere on the site.

ArtSigns is an online sign language glossary for terms in art and design, funded by the Department for Education and Skills. It contains over 2,000 signs, demonstrated with streaming video (QuickTime or Windows Media Player), which are categorised under 3D Design, Applied Arts and Design, Art History, Digital Media, Fine Art, General Art & Design Terms, and Visual Communications. Each term comes with a useful written definition, and there is a good system of cross-referencing to related terms, making it a handy guide to art and design in general as well as to the hearing-impaired.

Although there are many websites devoted to classic TV programmes, this one distinguishes itself for its better than average design and layout and for the seriousness with which it approaches its subject and the level of detail it provides. The site includes broadcast information on UK TV and some radio programmes, giving credits and transmission dates (both mostly taken from the Radio Times), interviews, articles, news, as well as a discussion forum with some 300 registered users. There is also a link to the homepage of a related publication, Timescreen which is devoted to TV fantasy programmes - it includes web versions of the magazine’s articles. In addition there is a gazetteer which features useful details of other similar forums, details on distributors and like-minded publications.

This multimedia site is devoted to the works of the poet Wilfred Owen and required Real, Windows Media Player and QuickTime to access some of the content. Although the front page of the site is cluttered and unclear and can be quite discouraging to the casual user and can be rather off-putting, in general WOMDA does in fact contain a wealth of material which can be accessed through the browse page. This includes digital copies of practically all of Owen’s original manuscripts, many of his letters, audio interviews with war veterans, as well as a large number of video clips taken from the Imperial War Museum’s holdings as well as material made more recently, all of which also relates to the First World war in general.

This compact website holds dozens of radio interviews by Don Wain with a variety of authors which were originally broadcast by CBS Radio (Real is required for access). Those interviewed include Peter Ackroyd, Raymond Carver, John Irving, Anthony Burgess, Margaret Attwood, Maya Angelou and many others. Plainly but effectively laid out in alphabetical order, the interviews are all between 25 and 45 minutes in duration. The site is hosted by Ohio University and is a model of its kind.

The parent site of epguides provides vast amounts of information relating to episodes of British and American television programmes, both fiction and non fiction. There are some very large gaps in many of the non-American entries especially and it is not always completely accurate either - it is nonetheless an invaluable resource, giving cast, crew, plot and transmission details for thousands of television programmes. It now includes useful 7-day listings facility for most TV channels in its local UK version. Previously known as TV Tome.

Although this has a strong American bias, the site provides a number of useful links to media-related educational sites and a number of forums for staff and students. A DocuSeek search allows you to search for key words, videos by grade level, length, filmmaker, and other characteristics, in addition to searching for key words. Member distributors include Bullfrog Films, California Newsreel, Direct Cinema Limited, Fanlight Productions, First Run/Icarus Films, New Day, and Women Make Movies.
