The product of Biofaction, a research and science communication company based in Vienna, the film festival was set out in 2011 to explore synthetic biology from all possible angles. Winners and shortlisted entries (over 110 films in total) are available to watch for free. Winning shorts include: Copy & Clone and Bruce (Animation category), Hybris and (In)visible (Fiction category), New Mumbai and E-Chromi (Documentary category), and Vermin (Special Award of the Jury).

An online hub for various research projects from Dr Ellen Wright, Lecturer in Cinema and Television at DeMontfort University. Her research interrogates notions of gender, sexuality, class, taste, nationality and consumption linked to Classical Hollywood cinema and focuses on denigrated forms such as the celebrity group ‘selfie’, pin-up photography, slash fiction and pornography as well as press books, promotional materials for films and TV shows, film fan annuals, film and photography magazines/pamphlets, syndicated radio plays, film star fiction, film star/celebrity endorsements and advertising tie-ups. There are some 16 podcasts which include interviews with lecturers, body-based performance artists, film programmers, lawyers and magazine editors.

BBC correspondents investigate global events, developments and issues. The collection is updated daily and episodes are available indefinitely. A vast selection of the programmes broadcast between 2007 and 2014 can be accessed via the Podcast Archive section where they are organised by year. More recent episodes are displayed in chronological order by date of transmission. Subject search is not supported, but this drawback is compensated with the guarantee that any time spend browsing will be rewarded with an interesting find. These include: a 50 minute programme on the controversial video This is America by Donald Glover about gun violence, mass shootings, racism and discrimination in the US; an investigation into Burundi-one of the most secretive countries in Africa, an insight into the little known astronomer George Ellery Hale, a look at robot cars filling our roads in the near future, and a report on the Yaba drug which is produced in Myanmar but consumed in Bangladesh.

A collection of 29 animations created by students at Sheffield Hallam University. The 3-minute videos are all about issues the students are concerned with and so they are likely to be of use to spark debate in the classroom. A festival for experimental music in Bergen, Norway. The festival organisers select work for broadcast by international sound artists, radio artists and composers who are pushing at the boundaries of their genre. Each year during the festival a radio art platform, Radio Space, streams online 24 hours a day so the public can tune in and become part of the festival’s home listening experiment. The festival’s website has a well organised archive which offers access to the websites of past festivals from 2006 until the present, all the Programme books from 2004 onwards, and the section Borealis in Videos and Sound which holds a selection of performances from each festival; there is also a Borealis Vimeo channel with over 75 videos and clips showing some of the experimental music and sound art performances.

This is the catalogue for the Essex Record Office, which holds not only documents, maps and photographs but also sound recordings and videos. The collections cover oral history; selected items from BBC Essex radio; selections from local hospital TV and talking newspapers; videos of local interest, including many from the East Anglian Film Archive; dialect recordings; and recordings of music performed by local musicians, including a major collection of folk music and folk dance drawn from Essex sources. The site also offers well-produced user guidelines to four registers: family, house, vehicles and electoral rolls. Official registers are excellent avenues into researching many aspects of local history and culture but their records can sometimes be difficult to understand, so the tips on how to search and how to make sense of the results are very useful. The advanced search tool can be used to narrow results to one type of material only (e.g. audiovisual). To watch the moving image and sound holdings an account needs to be created, and registration is free.

A BBC World Service series in which people who lived through moments of history bring a personal perspective to world events. The content is organised into four categories. An independent artists’ group whose aim is to promote radio as a site for creative experimentation. The group organises workshops, sound installations and live events, and commissions and broadcasts new sound works by international artists. The site has an audio gallery of commissioned works which have been aired on 13 partner stations including ABC (AUS), RTE, Resonance FM, Soundart Radio, Phonic FM, Radio Reverb, Radiophrenia, BCB, Wave Farm (US), Radio Papesse and Borealis Festival. Each commission has its own page with an in-depth description of the work, a biography of the artist, and links to excerpts of the work and in some cases interviews.

A collection of 11 short films about the digital experience commissioned by the BFI and the BBC to mark the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web in 2019. The films, made by emerging filmmakers, explore themes such as data, privacy, isolation and AI and are a mixture of genres including drama, documentary and experimental.
