The product of Biofaction, a research and science communication company based in Vienna, the film festival was set out in 2011 to explore synthetic biology from all possible angles. Winners and shortlisted entries (over 110 films in total) are available to watch for free. Winning shorts include: Copy & Clone and Bruce (Animation category), Hybris and (In)visible (Fiction category), New Mumbai and E-Chromi (Documentary category), and Vermin (Special Award of the Jury).

Also known as the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics, the institute was founded in 1995 for the purpose of pursuing research into the fundamental laws of gravitation. The Videos, Pictures and Texts section of the website is organised into five categories: Images, Movies and Simulations; AEI Research Reports; Brochures; Max Planck Research and Max Planck Yearbook. The audio-visual content includes short films about Quantum gravity and unified theories, the GEO600 Interviews-where scientists explain the direct detection of gravitational waves-, an interview with Nobel Laureate Rainer Weiss, and an animation illustrating how ATLAS analyses data from the international gravitational wave observatory network. The institute also provides the Einstein online, a resource that presents Einstein’s theories via two main sections: the Elementary Einstein with the basics of relativistic physics, and the Spotlight on Relativity, which explores modern relativity research.

Open to young people from anywhere in the UK, the BFI Film Academy offers a series of courses for 16-19-year-olds who may want to be part of the future film industry. Courses include: The UK Network Programme, which offers hands-on filmmaking opportunities; the Specialist Residential Academy, which focuses on the skills and knowledge around animation, documentary, screenwriting or VFX; the Craft Skills Residential Programme, which is delivered by the National Film and Television School and last for two years. Many of the short films made through these schemes can be seen via the BFI Film Academy youtube Channel.

This site is operated by the National Film Center at the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. It was established in 2017 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Japanese animation. The resource has been organised around four main sections: Categories, List of Works, List of Authors and the Noburo Ofuki Memorial Museum. Animation works can be searched by genre, type of motion, technique and character. The oldest film that can be watched on the site is The Dull Sword by Junichi Kouchi, which was released in June 1917. Other gems include, ?/Rhythmic Triangles/Fighting Cards (Shigehi Ogino, 1932), The Animal Olympics (Yasuji Murata, 1928) and Diseases Spread (Sanae Yamamoto, 1926), which was made to promote public awareness about hygiene.

An online resource for title sequence design spanning the history of film, television, conference and video game industries from the 1920s to the present. Title sequences can be watched on the site and there is information contextualising the creator and the style of each individual design (e.g. hand drawn, animation, modernist, nostalgic). A YouTube channel which aims to tell the history of cinema, one film at a time. The first episode cheats slightly, covering the years 1888 - 1914 in one fell swoop, but from 1915 onwards the focus is on a single film per year, each example being selected for the way in which it demonstrates the advances made in the cinematic medium, in terms of technology, technique, genre etc. Amongst the directors covered are Charlie Chaplin, Sergei Eisenstein, Cecil B. DeMille and Buster Keaton. The site addresses animation, the advent of sound, techniques such as montage and the close-up, as well as early filmic examples of documentary, horror and science-fiction.

This site celebrates a century of Japanese animation, with a fascinating selection of short films, spanning the years 1917 - 1941, all available to view online. The 64 films, curated by The Film Centre at Tokyo’s National Museum of Modern Art, include the oldest surviving Japanese animated film - 'The Dull Sword’, from 1917 - which was believed to be lost until a print was found in 2008 in an Osaka antique shop. The other films include public information films, propaganda, fairy tales, fables and historical drama. Although most of the site in its current form is in Japanese only, all the films have English titles and subtitles.

Each episode is told from the point of view of a particular enslaved person, and takes a chronological approach in order to show how the institution of slavery changed over time. Presented by journalists Rebecca Onion and Jamelle Bouie, the series also features contributions from historians. There is a range of interesting supplementary materials, including an interactive animation which gives a powerful sense of the scale of the trans-Atlantic slave trade across time.

The British Council’s British Films Directory is an extensive searchable database of new British films containing a continuously expanding record of UK features, shorts, documentaries and animation. Its archive of British films extends back to 1998. Each entry contains a brief synopsis, along with information on the sales agent, production company, cast and crew. A separate section, Films in Production lists British feature films in progress either in pre-production, production, or post-production, prior to their inclusion in the British Films Directory. It also lists a film’s director, producers, screenwriter, cast, sales agent and production status.
