Welcome to the Spiv Economy

Synopsis
Made during the industrial decline and rising unemployment of the 1980s, this documentary is a study of the burgeoning numbers of people in casual and temporary jobs, which indicates that the ‘gig’ or ‘spiv’ economy is not a new phenomenon. The film was produced by the Newsreel Collective and it was made under the 1982 Workshop Declaration, a Channel 4 initiative to fund and screen films from the ‘alternative’ film and video collectives, more commonly known as Workshops.[52 minutes]
