Cellular Signalling

Synopsis
Suitable for A2 and university students this 2006 DVD explains cellular signalling and deals in turn with the following topics:

Introducing cellular signalling - how cells need to signal to other cells to co-ordinate functions of the organism, signal molecules, external/internal signals, receptors, signal transduction.

Types of signalling (part 1) - explains paracrine, synaptic, endocrine, and autocrine signalling; how a signalling molecule often has different effects on different cells (e.g. acetylcholine)

Types of signalling (part 2) - the operation of small signalling molecules that pass through lipid bilayer and water-soluble signals that bind to receptors.

Signal processing - how signal processing can occur through channel-linked receptors, ligand-gated channels, voltage-gated channels, G-linked protein receptors; activation of second messengers; activation of enzymes by phosphorylation.

Signal amplification - signalling cascades, convergent and divergent signalling pathways.
