Sarah Ansari - At the Crossroads? Exploring Sindh’s Recent Past from a Spatial Perspective

Synopsis
Audio. Inaugural lecture delivered by Professor Sarah Ansari at the Windsor Auditorium, Royal Holloway, University of London on 17 February 2015. From a ‘sleepy backwater’ under the British Raj to the political heart of a new state, Sindh’s location vis-à-vis centres of power seemed to change dramatically with the creation of Pakistan in 1947. Ansari argues that this is an over-simplistic picture ignoring the extent to which the province (and particularly Karachi - now a ‘mega port-city’ on a par with Shanghai or London in their imperial heyday) was already entangled with places and people - Indian, imperial and international - beyond its boundaries. The lecture explores the interconnected spatial processes that, from the mid-19th century onwards, helped position and arguably redefine, Sindh’s place in the world.
