Review: Welfare, Crime and Society

Synopsis
This DVD uses the concepts of social justice, security and community to help clarify some of the debates raised in the Open University course books.

Reviewing the Course Story - This chapter reviews the ambiguities of surveillance, how surveillance can work to protect us (social welfare) and how it can work to discipline and regulate us (crime control), and how it can do both at the same time (the course story).

Reviewing Social Justice - This chapter discusses the concept of organising social justice and asks key questions such as’Can social welfare policies deliver social justice?'

Reviewing Security - This chapter focuses on security and asks where we can see this concept at work. It identifies key questions such as’Why has security become such an important idea in recent times?'

Reviewing Community - This chapter reviews the widespread and diverse use of the concept of community in relation to concern with how the different meanings that are attached to community should be understood.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
