Thatcherism 1979 - 1990

Synopsis
Professor Vernon Bogdanor’s lecture traces the rise of Thatcherism, from the collapse of the post-war settlement and a move away from One Nation Conservatism, a belief in government intervention and full employment, to a property-owning and capital-owning democracy. Bogdanor points to the main contradiction inherent in Thatcherism: that the market economy led to the rise of a get-rich quick ethos that was not compatible with the moral framework of thrift, prudence and hard work that Margaret Thatcher herself regarded as vital to a stable society.
