Substance, The: Albert Hoffmann’s Lsd

Synopsis
Martin Witz’s documentary tells the story of the drug which Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann synthesized in a laboratory in 1943. The film follows Hofmann’s experiments with the drug on himself, the research done by psychiatrists in the 1950s, its use by the CIA as a potential weapon, and the explosive effects when it was adopted by the counterculture in the 1960s. The film returns to Hofmann in the 2000s to hear his views on the drug: he expresses regret at what he sees as the misuse of the substance and reiterates his belief that LSD has enormous potential benefits if used correctly in psychoanalysis.
