In the Mirror of Maya Deren

Synopsis
IN THE MIRROR uses excerpts from the films of Maya Deren, together with archival footage and interviews with disciples and contemporaries such as Stan Brakhage and Jonas Mekas and a score by jazz composer and saxophonist John Zorn to present a portrait of arguably America’s most important and influential avant-garde filmmaker. The film features extracts from AT LAND, RITUAL IN TRANSFIGURED TIME, and Deren’s masterpiece, MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON. DVD extras include two film fragments: WITCH’S CRADLE (1943) - outtakes from a lost work starring Marcel Duchamp - and ENSEMBLE FOR SOMNAMBULISTS (1951), an unpublished choreographic work; Stan Brakhage’s hand-painted film WATER FOR MAYA (2000), a tribute to Deren that he is seen creating during the film and a Deren filmography.
