West Highland
- Synopsis
- Collection of four transport films about railways in the Scottish Highlands. The first, John Gray’s WEST HIGHLAND (1960) is about the last days of the steam train on the West Highland line between Glasgow and Mallaig. WEST OF INVERNESS (1939)is a short film about the problems faced by a rural community and the increasing role for the railway. It highlights the growing dependence on the outside world for provisions and goods. A LINE FOR ALL SEASONS (1980) tells the story of the construction of the West Highland Line, while The LINE TO SKYE (1973), with commentary by poet and novelist William McIlvanney was made to encourage tourists to travel by rail rather than car, and was shown in the House of Commons, in support of retaining the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh line
