Purity Myth, The: The Virginity Movement’s War Against Women
- Synopsis
- Video adaptation of feminist blogger Jessica Valenti’s book in which she argues that the so-called ‘virginity movement’ - an alliance of evangelical Christians, right-wing politicians, and conservative policy intellectuals - are attempting to roll back women’s rights by exploiting irrational fears about female sexuality. Valenti argues that rather than defining young women according to patriarchal notions of ‘purity’ and the mythical idea that the worth of a woman depends on what she does, or doesn’t do, sexually, we should be looking for solutions that pave the way for a future without a damaging emphasis on virginity, including a redefinition of male sexuality.
