Nine Muses, The

Synopsis
An impressionistic, semi-documentary by John Akomfrah which uses archival footage of the arrival of immigrants in Britain as well as clips illustrating the difficulties of integration faced by people once setted in the country. This footage is intercut with sequences shot by Akomfrah in Alaska and abandoned industrial areas in England featuring figures wandering in the barren landscapes, with the purpose of symbolising the disorienting experience of the first immigrants to the United Kingdom. The film’s soundtrack features readings from the works of Homer as well as William Shakespeare and Dylan Thomas.
