Title
Beyond Words
Synopsis
People engaged in a conversation may exchange 200 words per minute, but more than half of their communication is nonverbal. We often use gestures, postures and eye contact without thinking twice about them, but this behaviour can communicate so much beyond the words that we use. The way we treat our personal space and that of others can send a message that is loud and clear, even if we never speak a word.
Contents: Introduction; Kinesics - The difference between signals and gestures; Gestures - How gestures can regulate a verbal conversation; Congruence -Why congruence between actions and words is important; Context - The role context plays in reading a person’s non-verbal messages; Eye Contact -- The unwritten rules of eye contact; Facial Expression; Posture-- How the seat we choose in a meeting can send a message about our true feelings; Personal Space - The four zones of personal space and how we "defend" them.

Reading People
Synopsis
We send signals all the time and may not even be aware of it. Gestures we use and faces we make send signals. The volume, speed and inflections of our voices communicate in ways we may not intend. Through the study of emblems, illustrators, affect displays and eye behaviour, a student of body language can gain insight to what people express beyond the words that they use. When people do use words, students can learn to identify and interpret paralanguage. This programme provides valuable information about interpreting body language by presenting fun, easy to understand and real life examples.
Contents: Introduction; Preview; Kinesics; Emblems; Illustrators; Affect Display; Regulators; Adaptors; Eye Contact; Paralanguage; Haptics; Proxemics; Chronemics; Review.

Areas covered:- Why we use affect displays even if our conversation partner cannot see us. How paralanguage can overrule the literal meaning of spoken words. How touch can reveal unspoken messages. Why people can be just as "territorial" as animals. How culture and gender play a role in the signals people send. Why being late for a meeting might not be a big deal depending upon where you live.
