Beneath the Hood/Beneath the Hood Revisited

Synopsis
BENEATH THE HOOD tells the stories of students from Daniel House, a Pupil Referral Unit in Hackney for young people who have been permanently excluded from mainstream school. Producer/Director Eelyn Lee, spent a year working with the students and staff of Daniel House to generate this moving and revealing film portrait about a group of young people who are often marginalised within education and society as a whole. Key students tell their stories through songs written and performed by themselves and presented in the style of music videos. In the spirit of hip hop, several genres are thrown in to the documentary mix such as martial arts, animation and cookery as well as interviews and observational footage. Perhaps the most unique aspect of the film is that the songs are written in the voices of two fictional characters, Bradley Argos and Chantel Backoff, which allow the young people to reveal themselves whilst in the guise of an alter ego. The film pushes the boundaries of documentary filmmaking whilst providing triggers for discussion and debate around exclusion and the education system.High profile artists worked on the project such as hip hop performer Jonzi D, performance poet, Adisa and an East London-based music producer/composer, Kew. (52 minutes)

BENEATH THE HOOD REVISTED is a 15 minute follow-up film, made the following year which outlines the process of the project and some of the outcomes.
