Beyond Babel

Synopsis
A two-disc DVD set containing the four, long-unavailable, television programmes, originally broadcast in 1991, along with twenty nine new additional sequences which expand on some of the themes raised by the series. BEYOND BABEL is the only television series to take an in-depth look at the way in which English is being adopted and adapted around the world and how its tremendous rate of growth is driven by trade, culture, politics, and technology. The programmes also explore the impact of this globalization on endangered languages and the relationship of English with its other major linguistic competitors. the series was filmed in the USA, Japan, China, India, South Africa, and Europe, with contributions from a wide range of international personalities. The four individual programmes focused on how trade, culture, politics influenced the spread of English around the world, with the final programme looking to the future, influenced by new media and technology.
