Basis of Make-Up I-Iii
- Synopsis
- This film explores the mindset and artistic vision of iconoclastic filmmaker Heinz Emigholz, who is the originator of "Architecture as Autobiography," a series of documentaries on unique or unusual architects consisting of still images of the subject’s buildings. The meticulousness of Emigholz’s style of filmmaking is spotlighted in THE BASIF OF MAKE-UP I-III, a three-part DVD that showcases his illustrated notebooks and sketchbooks.
Part I features close-ups of 42 illustrated notebooks that Emigholz used from 1974 to 1983 to plan and produce the films ORDINARY SENTENCE, THE BASIS OF MAKE-UP, and THE MATTER OF THINGS. Part II includes still shots of 69 illustrated notebooks and sketchbooks from 1983 to 1996, which reveal the artistic processes behind THE HOLY BUNCH, NO SAFE HAVEN, and BLACK HARBOUR. Part III features details of 38 notebooks and sketchbooks from 1996 to 2004 used to map out SECOND NATURE and ARTHUR GORDON PYM: THE LAST SECRETS OF THE REPUBLIC. Part III includes shots of Gabriele D’Annunzio’s villa Cargnacco in Gardone, Italy, that was featured in Emigholz’s D’ANNUNZIO’S CAVE. - Language
