Bystander Intervention - Diffusion of Responsibility

Synopsis
The psychological phenomenon of ‘bystander apathy’ states that the more bystanders who witness an emergency the less likely it is that any one of them will intervene to help. This programme examines the infamous case of Kitty Genovese and subsequent key research into the bystander effect by Latane and Darley - the Epileptic Seizure Study, the Smokey Room Study and the Lady in Distress Study. Latane and Darley’s five stage cognitive decision-making model is outlined together with illustrative examples of this process and tips for increasing the likelihood of receiving help in an emergency. Further studies are also mentioned: Darley and Batson’s Good Samaritan Study (1973); James Wilson (1976); Schwartz and Gottlieb (1980).
