Synopsis: 1 (57 mins) The programme follows a single case concerning the impact of chronic illness on one patient and her family through a series of interviews with the patient and her mother. The diagnostic problems are highlighted and discussed with senior staff. The differential diagnosis includes Post-traumatic stress disorder, personality disorder, schizophrenia and manic depression. One of the commonest worries students have is knowing what to do when disaster strikes and this is fully explored. Sometimes there are no easy answers. Management options (hospital admission, home treatment and community support) are explored as are a variety of related practical issues.

There are extra features on Disc 2 that show the interviews uncut and allow a lecturer to make use of very powerful material. The lessons are clear and not forgotten. Case presentations are ideal for live lecture use. DVD has been structured to allow for this (Duration 40 minutes)
