Good Viva Video, The

Synopsis

This video, produced in partnership with Birkbeck, University of London, will help doctoral and masters students in all institutions: understand the importance of a viva; how vivas differ between disciplines;how to prepare; should you relax or panic; the roles of the internal and external examiners and your supervisor; how examiners are chosen; what questions to expect; how to use a practice viva; know the strengths and weaknesses of your thesis; what the examiners are looking for; how to cope with examiners’ mistakes or aggressive questions; understand the outcome.

Based on specially scripted drama scenarios and expert interviews, THE GOOD VIVA VIDEO was produced with advice from Professor John Wakeford, Director of the Missenden Centre for the Development of Higher Education. It will enable students to prepare for their vivas effectively and take some of the fear out of the experience.

The video is available for sale to universities, colleges and other organisations. For a one-off payment, institutions can be licensed to make the video available to all their registered students either in DVD format or via an intranet or other secure digital platform.

This version is a new edition of the video which was originally made in 2007. It has been re-made, with a new script written in consultation with many of the 80 universities using the original video.
