Maillart’s Bridges

Synopsis
Continuing his exploration of "architecture as autobiography," filmmaker Heinz Emigholz focuses here on the work of Swiss artist, civil engineer, and legendary bridge builder Robert Maillart, who revolutionised concrete-based construction. He utilized the structural strength of reinforced concrete, establishing a structural form based on both flat and curved concrete slabs reinforced with steel. In doing so, he brought out the expressive potential of concrete. In this film Emigholz eschews facts and dates in favour of freeform visual poetry, using shots of Maillart’s revolutionary bridges to convey the creativity necessary to turn cold, hard concrete into curved, soaring, expressive structures.

DVD extras include: optional English language track, a biography of Robert Maillart, and extensive onscreen interviews with David P. Billington, Christian Menn, and Jorg Schlaich.
