Jasper Johns: Catenery (Jacob’s Ladder)/Smithson and Serra: Beyond Modernism?
- Synopsis
- Two programmes combined on one tape/disc.
JASPER JOHNS - Professor Fred Orton looks at ‘Flag’ (1954-1955), the object that established Jasper Johns as one of the most important contemporary artists, and ends by looking at one of his most recent ‘Catenery’ (Jacob’s Ladder) 1999. Professor Orton considers the distinction that’s all too often overlooked between the ‘art object’ and the ‘work of art’, and makes a distinction between what he calls the ‘everyday self’ and the ‘extraordinary self’.
SMITHSON AND SERRA; BEYOND MODERNISM? - Shows works by Robert Smithson and Richard Serra, sculptors who believe that sculpture should have a dialogue with its environment (site-specific). Two sculptures of Richard Serra are shown in an urban environment - ‘Fulcrum’ in the Broadgate development at Liverpool Street in London and ‘Tilted Arc’ in New York (the latter has since been destroyed) . One of these, ‘Spin Out, a Tribute to Robert Smithson’, is in a rural site at the Kroller-Muller museum in Holland. - Series

- NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
