Phenylketonuria

Synopsis
Phenylketonuria - PKU for short - is the commonest metabolic disorder in the UK. People with PKU cannot metabolise phenylalanine, one of the amino acids found in protein foods, and if left untreated the condition leads to severe mental retardation. However if detected early, by a routine blood test in infancy, PKU can be successfully treated with a protein-restricted diet. The video discusses the presentation, diagnostic testing, management and biochemical basis of the condition.
