Passion for Churches, A

Synopsis
Sir John Betjeman applies a wry but affectionate scrutiny to the churches, clergy and parishioners of Norfolk in this television programme first broadcast in 1974. Betjeman opens our eyes to the often-overlooked details in some of our most familiar traditions, from the quirks of great architecture to the allure of bell-ringing and jumble sales. As the world of Sunday schools and the Mothers’ Union is threatened by the cynicism of modern times, a mournful Betjeman forewarns of derelict churches and dwindling congregations. This classic documentary is a touching eulogy to both the splendour and the simplicity of English parish life, told in the inimitable style of our best- loved poet.
