Potential for Species Separation in Mixed Fisheries in the North Sea, The

Synopsis
This video explains the problem of mixed fisheries in which a range of species is caught on the same grounds. Options are described to reduce the discarding of undersized fish or unwanted species by improving fishing gear design.

There are many sequences of underwater video showing fish reactions to fishing gear. The film demonstrates how these behaviours may be useful in guiding the target fish into the net while allowing the undersized or unwanted fish to escape. A range of gear developments is illustrated including separator panels, cut-away headline, grids or panels with open meshes, some of which form the subject of current research projects funded by the European Union, Scotland and other European countries in collaboration with the Scottish fishing industry.

The film is aimed at fishermen, fisheries managers and also the general public to inform them about research to improve fish stocks in the North-east Atlantic.
