Status Anxiety
- Synopsis
- Philosopher and author Alain de Botton investigates the possibility that people are as concerned by status in modern society as they are by wealth. He travels to the United States to test his theory that the stress of proving oneself in a meritocratic environment leads to anxiety, or even shame, as people fail to meet their own expectations and worry that others will judge them as losers. Divided into three parts, de Botton examines the causes and manifestations of status anxiety and looks for solutions.
