Astor Place Riots, The

Synopsis
Radio documentary about one of the bloodiest riots in New York’s history that took its toll during a performance of Macbeth at the Astor Place Opera House, New York, on May 10, 1849. Tim Pigott-Smith traces the events leading up to the riot and examines what part the rivalry between actors William Macready and Edwin Forrest had to play in this violent explosion of class antagonisms.
