Henry V - England’s Captain

Synopsis
A two-part video, in 4 Learning’s Middle English slot, aiming to make literacy more attractive to reluctant readers by locating a Shakespeare play in the recognisable world of football. Henry V - a set text for Key Stage 3 (11-13, Scottish level E,F) - is about leadership and patriotism. Clips are shown from Kenneth Branagh’s HENRY V (1989) and there are interviews with well-known football figures. PART 1: ONCE MORE UNTO THE PITCH offers different interpretations of the play, comparing the character of King Henry V to the manager or captain of a football team. The conspiracy scene is unravelled for its significance in showing Henry as single minded and determined. PART 2: AGINCOURT-ENGLAND WIN AWAY follows Henry’s campaign in France up to the French defeat at Agincourt. Excerpts from the play are matched by the comments of footballers and managers on the problems faced in playing away from home.
