- Hans Walter Kosterlitz (1903-1996) was born in Berlin. The son of a physician, he studied medicine there and at other German universities. He and his colleague John Hughes were the discoverers of the endorphin, enkephalin. This endogenous opioid compound is produced in the human body. Their discovery, for which they were awarded the Lasker Award in 1978, revealed the role of the brain in pain modulation. Kosterlitz discusses his higher education and his career in biochemistry. 131 minutes.
