Take a Seat! Chair Design in the Twentieth Century
- Synopsis
- Throughout the twentieth century the basic form of the chair was subject to major innovations and sometimes even radical rethinking, often prompted by the emergence of new materials and production techniques. As a result some chairs have acquired iconic status, being seen as either timeless design classics or touchstones embodying the aesthetic style of the period in which they were made. This slide set illustrates some of the diverse approaches to chair design in the twentieth century, placing them within technological, cultural and economic contexts.
