Two Cases of Schizophrenia

Synopsis
An illustrated lecture to an audience of psychiatric medical staff about schizophrenia - one of the core conditions managed in general adult psychiatry. The teaching session presents two cases where the emphasis is on understanding the symptoms and progress of the illness. In the textbook the mental state examination seems so easy but in the real world of busy clinical medicine most people find it confusing.
Case One: Patient describes her psychotic experiences, typical of those seen in this condition. At the case presentation one of the doctors describes the mental state examination and this is a good example of the standard expected in an examination setting (13 minutes).
Case two: Here the patient is seen in three interviews spread over a period of time and it is instructive to see the changing mental state. Florid thought disorder is seen in interview one (14 minutes). In interviews two and three she is much improved. Discussion is wide ranging and also touches on the importance of the doctor-patient relationship.
Additional features include interviews with community nurses in the UK and China.
