Synopsis
This 2-part DVD set explores the life, times and work of George Eliot, a woman ahead of her time: a proud and determined individual who continually broke the sexual, religious and social rules of Victorian society. She was one of the greatest minds of her age, yet she demeaned herself for love. Scandals and rumours plagued her life, but never defeated her will or her literary genius. Against all odds, she wrote some of the world’s greatest masterpieces including Middlemarch, The Mill on the Floss and Daniel Deronda. Disc 1 consists consists of the BBC production of Daniel Deronda. Disc 2 is a biography of George Eliot presented by Maureen Lipman and an examination of the role of music in her life and work.

George Eliot was passionate about music and her writing is steeped in musical allusion. This feature explores musical reference in her work and investigates contexts such as Eliot’s friendship with Wagner, the legacy of Romanticism, music’s role in scientific theory, and the ambivalent status of female musicality. With George Eliot the viewer visits a Victorian recital of the music that inspired her: amongst others - Purcell, Handel, Liszt and Wagner.
