Illustrates the use of information systems in banks by following the process by which a cheque that is paid in goes through the bank’s clearing system and becomes a piece of electronic information paid into an account. Also covers automated teller machines (ATMs) for drawing out cash, the technology that alLows payment by cards (EFTPOS), another system (BACS) that enables people and companies to pay each other directly, without a card or cheque. With so much business being done electronically, security is a big issue. Also discusses credit card fraud and smart cards, and data protection.
