On Your Own Two Feet

Synopsis
A parent or caregiver bringing up a blind child will be faced with many challenges. How do blind children perceive and learn orientation? How does mobility develop? How can movement be encouraged? These are questions which families, schools and day-care centres need answering. In the video five blind children, from birth to six years of age, illustrate the development of movement and orientation.
The video is produced in three parts: 1) the relationship between perception of the environment and what motivates movement is examined; 2) explores characteristic differences in the development of movement in blind children; 3) devotes special attention to the role parents and caregivers can play in encouraging movement.
