Hand in Hand: It Can Be Done
- Synopsis
- This video and accompanying teacher’s guide, part of the American Foundation for the Blind’s (AFB) Deaf-Blind Project, serve as an introduction to deaf-blindness and provide strategies for educating students with this special need. The resource, designed for families, teachers, and other educational team members, fosters independence and mobility among deaf-blind students. The video contains four sections that can be watched altogether or one at a time; these address teaching basic instructional concepts, communication, orienteering, and mobility skills. Also addressed is the role of the family in the educational process. Interviews with parents, teachers, peers of deaf-blind students, and experts in the field are interspersed throughout the video, as well as footage of students engaged in the learning process in a variety of educational settings. The guide provides discussion topics. Each section contains a title, an overview of the information to be presented, and a conclusion. As an example of the material, one highlighted segment emphasizes the importance of touch; adequate time to explore, process information and respond to stimuli; and the value of creating situations that give students a sense of control.
