Iceman Cometh, The
- Synopsis
- Eugene O’Neill wrote THE ICEMAN COMETH in 1939 but it was not produced on Broadway until 1946. It was the 1956 Broadway ‘Circle-in-the-Square’ revival of the play that bought Jason Roberts Jnr. (as he was then known) to the role of Hickey - the travelling salesman whose arrival for his annual binge is eagerly awaited by the denizens of Harry Hope’s low-life bar which is the setting of the play. Hickey arrives a changed man, and his effort to strip the hopeless drunks and misfits of their ‘pipe dreams’ is the core of the play.
This landmark 1960 television production by New York’s Channel 13 (then known as WNTA-TV), brought Robards back to the role of Hickey. Sidney Lumet had left television directing to make Twelve Angry Men (1957) but he returned to television to direct this production which was shot on videotape - only introduced in 1956 - and shown over two nights on November 14th and 21st 1960. - Series
